On October 10, 2023, former French surgeon Joël Le Scouarnec commenced trial, facing grave accusations of sexually assaulting nearly 300 patients, predominantly minors. This case is being characterized as the largest child sex abuse scandal in France’s history.

The 74-year-old surgeon’s legal troubles began in 2017 when he was arrested following allegations that he had assaulted or raped four girls. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison for those offenses. However, the depth of the case expanded significantly as law enforcement officials continued their investigation. During this process, authorities discovered journals authored by Le Scouarnec that documented hundreds of additional incidents of abuse over the years, intensifying the scope of the allegations against him.

Currently, Le Scouarnec is contending with the prospect of an additional 20 years in prison if found guilty of the new charges. The sheer number of alleged victims has drawn considerable public attention and concern, shedding light on systemic failures within the healthcare system.
