America’s Mightiest Steam Giant Rolls Through Kansas City on a Patriotic Journey West

The world’s largest operating steam locomotive, Union Pacific’s Big Boy 4014, has arrived in Kansas City as part of a coast-to-coast tour marking America’s 250th anniversary. Built in the 1940s to haul freight through mountain passes during World War II, the 1.2-million-pound locomotive was retired in 1961 and later restored. It began its journey in Sacramento and is now heading back west after a July Fourth stop in Philadelphia.

Pentagon Seeks $1.5 Trillion as Iran War Tab Hits $37.5 Billion and Grows

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine testified before the Senate requesting $1.5 trillion in defense funding, including $67.1 billion to cover ongoing Iran war costs estimated at $37.5 billion so far. Without new funding, parts of the Navy and Air Force budgets could run dry by August, and the Pentagon has already begun limiting training and maintenance.

Lost for 74 Years, the Plane That Made Flying Safer Has Finally Been Found

The wreckage of a Pan Am flight that crashed into the Atlantic Ocean in 1952 has been discovered roughly 2,000 feet underwater off Puerto Rico. The Douglas DC-4 went down shortly after takeoff from San Juan, killing 52 of the 69 people aboard. Searchers identified the largely intact plane by its still-visible Pan Am logo. The disaster led to the now-standard preflight safety briefing used on all commercial flights today.

Your Daily Coffee Habit May Actually Be Protecting Your Heart

The American Heart Association says most adults can safely drink up to five cups of black coffee per day, and doing so may actually benefit heart health. Studies suggest around 400 milligrams of caffeine daily could lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. However, those benefits shrink when sugar or heavy creamers are added, and brewing method matters, as paper-filtered coffee shows the strongest cardiovascular advantages.

India’s Youth-Led Cockroach Party Storms Parliament in Defiance of Modi Government

Tens of thousands of protesters marched on India’s Parliament in New Delhi before police dispersed the crowd with tear gas. The demonstrators belong to the self-described Cockroach Janta Party, which formed after a Supreme Court justice compared unemployed youth to parasites and cockroaches. The group is now demanding the education minister resign over repeated leaks of India’s high-stakes medical entrance exam.

Massachusetts Mother’s Murder Trial Forces a Reckoning With Postpartum Psychosis

Jury selection has begun for Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother charged with killing her three children in January 2023. Her defense team argues she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was overmedicated, while prosecutors claim the killings were premeditated. Her husband has separately sued her medical team for failing to monitor her medication. The case has little legal precedent.
